Radishes

Instead of a cellophane bag of grocery store radishes, one day I bought a bunch with the leaves still attached.  Being an artist, I picked what I thought was the prettiest bunch.  But when I got home, I realized that the damp leaves would rot fast, even in the refrigerator, so I got out a small cutting board, threw the radish bunch on it and went to get a sharp knife. When I returned with the knife I paused a moment thinking, “Well, THAT is pretty!”  The rest of the groceries had to wait while I twisted and turned the cutting board to optimize the light and took about a dozen photos, one of which was the reference photo for this painting.

This watercolor on watercolor ground on canvas has been sprayed with a UV protectant so that you do not have to put it in a frame with glass.  You might be surprised to see how much closer a painting feels when it is not behind glass.
